After a long day of working and running errands, often people feel like sinking into the sofa and snacking. Being a couch potato can be a welcomed relief after non-stop activities. But there are other ways to unwind and relax so you feel better and sleep more peacefully.
Hide Your Cell Phone and Laptop
The urge to check our electronic devices can be persistent. Resist the temptation by turning them off and putting them away. The emails and updates will still be there in the morning — after you have a good night’s sleep.
Dim All the Lights
Home is your sanctuary away from the glare of office or industrial lighting. Dim the lights and bask by the glow of a few scented candles or the fireplace. If you don’t have a fireplace, electric ones are a great substitute that can keep you warm on a chilly night.
Do Yoga
Instead of crunching on pretzels, become a human pretzel and do some yoga. The gentle stretching of your muscles, quiet discipline and breathing help you to de-stress. Doing yoga is also good for your overall fitness and well-being.
Get a Mantra
Meditation is another way to lower your blood pressure after a demanding day. Choose your mantra and give it a try. You might be surprised at how calm you feel after just five or ten minutes. It often takes time to learn how to meditate and find your comfort zone, but it’s worth the wait.
Indulge in a Warm Soak
Whether you have a stand-shower, bathtub, or bubbling hot tub, a warm soak relieves your muscles and helps you relax. The jets in a hot tub provide incredible benefits but you can also get a massaging shower head to get a gentler massage.
Tea Time and Aromatherapy
Fragrant teas can also be a soothing way to end the day. Put away the coffee cup and try some chamomile or peppermint tea. Scents also help people to relax, especially lavender. Slather on some lavender lotion while you sip tea and listen to your favorite calming music.
Just Do Nothing
When you’re completely exhausted, laying down and doing nothing feels incredible. Slip into comfortable clothes and simply exist for a while. You can also read a book or watch your favorite TV show. Both involve little effort and can make it easier to leave a tough day behind.
Two of my favorite ways to unwind are walking my beloved canine companion then having a glass of wine. No matter how you do it, the goals are to decompress from a hard day and get ready for a restful sleep.
