Speaking at a Women in Media event at the National Press Club this afternoon, Julie Bishop has raised a number of controversial topics.

She started by commenting on being the only woman in cabinet, in saying “I pay tribute to all the women who have been cabinet ministers before me. The challenge I have set for myself is to do the best I can for those who will follow me. I feel that responsibility every day. I don’t think there is such a divide [between genders], in cabinet we deal with a whole range of issues and I have an opinion on every single one, likewise the males, of course they have opinions.”

“But we do need to be more representative generally; we need diversity in our Parliament.”

The Hon Catherine Cusack, Parliamentary Secretary for Tertiary Education and Skills and Chair and Australian Representative at the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians is passionate about increasing the representation of women in parliament.

Earlier this year she made an adamant declaration in parliament, saying ”There is a real sense that women are under siege and that women are going backwards.”

Catherine will be speaking at our flagship event, the 4th National Public Sector Women in Leadership Summit in December 2014. She will be joined by a fantastic line up of speakers including Senator the Hon MIchaelia Cash (Minister assisting the PM for Women), Senator The Hon Kate Lundy, Dr Helen Watchirs, ACT Human Rights and Discrimination Commissioner at Dr Jill Charker, Chief Executive of Comsuper.
